The Whirlpool WHER25 UltraEase™ Reverse Osmosis Filtration System is designed to provide bottled water-quality water right from your faucet using three filters. Here’s how they work:

  • WHEERF pre-filter: Filter number one reduces large sediment particles as well as unwanted flavors and odors from your water by 95.2 percent. This filter requires changing every six months to keep the WHEERM membrane fully functional.
  • WHEERM membrane: The reverse osmosis membrane separates water from organic materials and dissolved solids as it’s pushed through the membrane at a high pressure. This component of the system has a lifespan of around two years.
  • WHEERF post-filter: This activated carbon post-filter removes any lingering contaminants and pollutants that could affect the taste and odor of the water.

Together, these filtration stages remove or reduce the following contaminants:

  • Arsenic
  • Barium
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium (III and VI)
  • Copper
  • Cysts
  • Lead
  • Nitrate
  • Nitrite
  • Radium 226/228

  • Turbidity
  • TDS
  • Chlorine taste and odor
  • Ammonium
  • Bicarbonate
  • Bromide
  • Chloride
  • Magnesium
  • Sodium
  • Sulfate
  • Tannin
  • Zinc

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have a set of standards to establish minimum safety requirements for residential water treatment filters, purifiers, and reverse osmosis systems for drinking water. Here are the relevant certifications the Whirlpool WHER25 UltraEase™ Reverse Osmosis Filtration System meets:

  • NSF/ANSI 42: Certification to this standard verifies that filters reduce aesthetic impurities like chlorine taste or odor. This certification is appropriate for point-of-use and point-of-entry treatment systems.
  • NSF/ANSI 58: Certification to this standard ensures that reverse osmosis systems utilize a process where reverse pressure forces water through a semi-permeable membrane. These systems reduce the presence of contaminants regulated by Health Canada and the EPA.

Flow Rate

The Whirlpool WHER25 UltraEase™ Reverse Osmosis Filtration System generates 18.4 gallons of water every 24 hours.

The user manual states that WHER25 should not be used in an attempt to purify non-potable water sources, or with water that is microbiologically unsafe. It should also not be used to disinfect water of unknown quality without prior disinfection. Additionally, homes with hard water will still need to invest in a softener or conditioner, as this system will not address that issue.

Installation and Maintenance

The Whirlpool WHER25 filtration system is designed for easy installation and requires virtually no maintenance. The user manual is equipped with detailed do-it-yourself instructions so you won’t need to call a plumber for assistance. Nonetheless, be sure to comply with local plumbing codes as you plan your installation and check out this handy assembly video if you need a visual reference.

Before you begin, shut off the hot and cold water lines, then proceed with the following seven-step installation process:

  1. Install the cold water supply fitting.
  2. Install the RO drain adapter kit under the sink or in a remote location, making sure all connections are tight. Do not over-tighten the plastic pieces.
  3. Locate mounting slots on the back of the RO filter and install in a location high enough to allow room to change the filters without taking the unit off the wall.
  4. Place the storage tank next to the RO assembly. Apply thread sealing tape to tank nipple and tighten the tubing connector onto the tank nipple. Do not connect the tube yet.
  5. Use the existing sink top hole for the RO faucet installation or drill a new hole in the sink or countertop. The hole should be 1-3/8″ diameter. Insert black and blue tubes into the hole, leaving about one foot of tubing on the countertop. Locate red tubing that’s connected to the RO filter and route the loose end through the countertop to faucet. Mount faucet body onto base. Install the battery on the faucet base.
  6. Cut tubes to length and connect.
  7. Sanitize your system. Make sure the RO system is turned off and the tank is empty. Add 3 ml of bleach to the yellow tube and connect the yellow tubing to the tank connector. Pressure test the system and purge the bleach. Do not consume water before the purging is complete. Note that it will take several hours before the water is ready for drinking.

No maintenance is required for your new RO system other than changing the filters. The WHEERF pre-filter and WHEERF post-filter require changing every six months, while the WHEERM membrane needs to be replaced every one to two years. A blinking light on your faucet system will alert you when the filters need to be replaced.

Pros and Cons

User experiences vary, so keep in mind that the ease of your installation may depend on your level of handiness and personal preferences. For instance, some users reported that the filters wear out faster than anticipated, but that is also dependent on your household’s level of water consumption. There are also lots of comments about the filter’s cheap plastic faucet that’s included, which is prone to leaking. With that in mind, here are the pros and cons of this model:

  • Ease of use: This Whirlpool reverse osmosis filtration system comes with an EZ-Change Indicator Light to let users know when it’s time to change the filters. All filters are equipped with patented UltraEase Technology, which are relatively easy to change and don’t require any tools. Maintenance requirements on the unit are low as well.
  • Third-party tested: The WHER25 has been approved by the FDA and third-party testing has ensured the product works as advertised.
  • Good deal: This reverse osmosis system is reasonably priced and provides high-quality, great-tasting water from your home.

  • Lack of efficiency: For every one gallon of water put through the reverse osmosis process, this system wastes four gallons of water. The user manual also indicates that the WHER25 needs to run for 24 hours after each filter replacement to purge the system.
  • Does not filter fluoride: The system does not reduce the presence of fluoride, which is a key reason many people seek out an RO filter
  • Physical size: The unit is pretty big, requiring a significant amount of under-sink space compared to more compact RO units.
  • Capacity: The 18 gallons-per-day capacity is much less than other RO systems on the market.
  • Cheap plastic faucet: The filter features a plastic faucet, which many users have noted is undesirable and in some cases cracked resulted in leaks. Users have also noted the faucet features an air gap that creates additional leaks.

What is the flow rate of the Whirlpool WHER25?

The Whirlpool WHER25 produces 18.4 gallons of water per day.

What does the Whirlpool WHER25 remove?

This reverse osmosis system is NSF certified to remove 99% of lead from your drinking water. It also reduces microbial cysts, chemicals, dissolved solids, sediment, as well as chlorine taste and odor.

How long does the Whirlpool WHER25 last?

The Whirlpool WHER25’s two filters last for six months each, while the membrane filter has a lifespan of one to two years.

The Whirlpool WHER25 provides an effective and convenient way to get filtered water right at home. This NSF/ANSI-certified model is also a fraction of the price of competitor models. However, its capacity to generate clean water is at a much slower rate than the competition, while taking up more space under your counter. Additionally, the system won’t help remove fluoride and users are stuck with a cheap plastic faucet with known issues of leaking.

With these factors in mind, you may want to consider other options like the Aquasana SmartFlow™ Reverse Osmosis filtration system. It’s been tested and certified to remove up to 99.99% of 90 contaminants including fluoride, and it comes an all-metal faucet in your finish of choice.
